Caged Animals is the recording project of songwriter Vin Cacchione. Born in a bedroom in the DIY haze of early 2010’s Brooklyn, Caged Animals’ lo-fi roots led them to release records on Lucky Number Music, tour internationally, and share stages with DIIV, Darwin Deez, The Rapture, Blood Orange, and Mac Demarco. In 2011 “Teflon Heart” became a top 10 single in Germany and their songs have been used in film,TV, and podcasts. Vin recently co-composed the score for The Space Within which stars Jessica Chastain.
Over the last decade, Vin produced the debut album for legendary writer Larry “Ratso” Sloman, working with Nick Cave, John Cale, and Yasmine Hamdan in the process. He has also collaborated with pioneering figures in fiction podcasts like Welcome to Night Vale and Hedwig creator John Cameron Mitchell, honing his craft as a storyteller and songwriter along the way.
Make Strange Friends is Caged Animals’ most intimate and ambitious album to date. It was recorded to tape with cult Canadian songwriter Jon Mckiel in the hazy post-pandemic years after moving from Brooklyn to Sackville, NB. The album pairs nine character-driven songs with an absurdist radio drama entitled “Make Strange Friends,” bringing Vin’s work in song and podcast into close alignment. With vivid characters navigating life’s fringes, the record flickers between warmth and weirdness, echoing elements of Mutations, The Basement Tapes, Nebraska, and Waiting For Godot. A time capsule from a strange era, Make Strange Friends is Caged Animals at their most openhearted and experimental.
