You’ve no doubt seen these folks here over the years- Isis/ Old Man Gloom, Botch/ Russian Circles, Baptists but Sumac (Thrill Jockey) is as much abstract noise, even free-jazz, as they are metal- meticulously detailed and complex one moment, rudimentary and repetitive the next, and completely untethered and unscripted at seemingly random intervals—it’s extreme discipline and control on one end and an almost feral energy on the other.
Hailing from Queens, New York, by way of Kathmandu, Nepal, CHEPANG (Relapse Records) dub their music “immigrindcore”: They use samples from Nepali pop songs, and sing in Nepali. They embrace their immigrant identities. CHEPANG meld these elements together into a ferocious grindcore attack that sounds as violent as the means through which the band wish to achieve redemption.
Patrick Shiroishi (Sub-Pop) is a Japanese-American multi-instrumentalist and composer based in Los Angeles who is perhaps best known for his extensive and incredibly intense work with the saxophone. Among the premier improvising musicians in Los Angeles, Shiroishi has presented work and performed at the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the International Museum of Surgical Sciences and has toured around the world in various solo and band configurations including The Armed, contemporary classical ensemble Wild Up and Upsilon Acrux.
